英国全称“大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国”， 简称“联合王国”。人们常常非正式地以英格兰代表整个“联合王国”，在中文里，就有了“英国”这个名称。而大不列颠（Great Britain）和不列颠群岛（the British Isles）属于地理名称， 大不列颠是不列颠群岛中最大的岛，包括英格兰、苏格兰和威尔士，但不包括北爱尔兰；而不列颠群岛则包括大不列颠和整个爱尔兰岛（北爱尔兰和爱尔兰共和国）。英国的大部分地区都在大不列颠岛上，所以有时在英文中“大不列颠”又用以代指英国全国。
