语气（Mood）在科技英语中的用法

1. 祈使语气（The Imperative Mood)

祈使语气在其他语体中用的最多的是表示请求、命令、建议，而在科技英语中祈使语气多用于以下几种情况：

1. 表示指示、建议、注意事项，以及说明试验操作程序，仪器设备使用说明上常常使用。例句：Protect the unit against excessive heat, dust, shock hazards and moisture. 

释义：不可将本机放在温度过高，灰尘太多，易受震和潮湿的地方。

1. “祈使句+and……”这种结构在科技英语里常常用来表示条件和结果，或设想和推论，即祈使句部分表示条件或设想，而and引出的另一个句子表示结果和推论。如：

例句：Place a clean nail in a solution of copper sulphate, and the nail will be coated with red copper.

释义：把一枚干净的钉子放在硫酸铜溶液中，钉子就会镀上一层红色的铜。

1. —些动词（如let， suppose， say， imagine， take等）的祈使语气表示：假设、设想、假定、譬如等意，如：

例句：Suppose that the magnet moves away from the coil, then the flux will be decreasing.

释义：假定把磁铁从线圈中拔出，那么磁通量就会减少。

1. 虚拟语气（The Subjunctive Mood ）在科技英语中虚拟语气多用于：
2. 非真实条件句中（Sentences of Unreal Condition )，而且多用表示与现在事实相反的谓语动词的虚拟语气。这种用法并不强调与现在事实相反，而是表示没有时间性的条件及推理

例句：If it were at a temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit, this cubic inch of hydrogen would contain 

about 880 billion atoms.

释义：如果温度在华氏32度，这一立方英寸的氢就包含大约有个原子。

1. 表示将来不能实现或无把握实现的条件和推理。如：

　　例句：If all our air should suddenly rush away into space, the blue of the sky would be gone.

释义：假如大气突然脱离地球散到太空中去，天空的蓝色就要消失。

1. 含蓄条件句（Sentence of Implied Condition），在这种句子中所假设的条件不是用条件从句表示，而是用某些词（如：without，otherwise，or等）、介词短语（如：but for，in the absence of……， in any other way等）、动词不定式和句子表示。

　　例句：Gas molecules move in all direction, otherwise the color could not spread throughout the jar.

　　释义：气体分子是到处运动的，不然的话，这种颜色就不扩散及整个瓶子。

　　例句：The molecules of water are in-　　credibly minute. It would take about 125 million of them to form a row an inch long.

　　释义：水分子小得难以置信，要排成一英寸长就需要大约一亿两千五百万个水分子。

　　例句：Reduce the sun to the size of a ball. The earth would then be the size of a grain of sand.

　　释义：把太阳缩到球那么大,那么地球就是砂粒那么小。

1. 与某些动词有关的名词性从句中，这些动词为：suggest , require , desire , request ,order 等。

　　例句：He suggested that this state should be known as the “radiant”.

　　释义：他建议把这种状态称为“辐射”。

　　例句：It was suggested that such devices should be designed and produced without delay.

　　释义：曾经有人建议立即设计和生产这种装置。
